Nature is both our Worst Enemy and our Best Friend

As sailors, we are one with the sea and the wind.

The wind gives us wings to help us traverse the seas.

But if we wing IT, nature will be relentless.

It takes a conscious effort to make the right choices unless you grew up on-board or unless you are a natural.

But when we do make the right choices, life on a boat can be truly invigorating - makes our hearts come alive, makes us younger.

So what are some of those choices:

How exactly can we use the wind to best advance our goals?

Of course, our choice of sails is very important. The more sail surface we have, in theory the more wind power we can use. Sailing catamarans is a little different from conventional boats. In a storm, it is important to lower and diminish sail as quickly as possible and there is little room for error.

Milo explains:

Wanna leave behind all of civilization?

If you just think about your catamaran as a place to escape from the stress of society, the hustle- and bustle at the workplace, and the emptiness of living in the concrete jungle, I am with you all the way!

But do we really want to give up all electronics and the convenience, safety, and happiness they provide?

I don't really want to live like a hermit in a cave on the sea or a Robinson Crusoe carving out his own place starting from ground zero.

Nah, let's vote for convenience, safety, and happiness!

For safety's sake we have a whole bunch of nautical electronic equipment. This list is an overview of the basics and some more. For the sake of convenience, we have air-conditioning, induction-cooking equipment, desalination watermakers, but also electric winches, scuba-diving gear. On top of that, there are notebooks, app-rich smartphones, i-Phones, i-Pads and a gamut of other electronic devices like cameras, video-cameras, projector-screens, etc.

I want juice and I want it now!

Yes, as the typically spoiled Westerner, I need my electricity. What about you?

Anyhow, I decided that we live in great and happy times because we can have it all...

We can now install a few highly efficient solar panels, wind turbines and regeneration engines and get away with our

A secondary way how we can use wind is through wind turbines. We will look at and investigate a variety of wind turbine types to generate electric power.

There are various designs with both typical and atypical types adopted on boats

The quest  for more energy and more efficiency

Man is a real idea generator and we try to come up with better and more efficient designs. The Archimedes windmill on the right is claimed to be more effcient and more silent, a win-win situation. Hopefully, we will get a spin-off for marine use.
