Sailing Season

Many approximations here. The northern limit in Atlantic is ridiculously high, you don't want to sail the North Atlantic between November and February between Canada ans Brittany. Adversely, you can perfectly go from Cabo Verde to Brasil in May or June.

In the SE part of the Pacific, no pb, you can do Chile-Marquesas anytime, e.gJanuary.

    Look at Jimmy Cornell's atlas...

May though October on the west coast of Mexico is hurricane season... And evidently the coast of California is never good, yet I lived in LA and you can sail any day of the year.

Bill Inch there are several sailing vessels as we speak, sailing from Mexico to points in the S Pacific.

Bob Puharic absolutely, this is the time of year to head south. I had dinner on the Trimaran Solar Wind in Bahia Blandra, just outside of La Paz. We were coming back from Race Week in early May (I think it was 1997) and they they were headed off to the South Pacific in a couple of weeks. They left closer to June 1st. They ran right into a tropical storm, radioed a Mayday but neither boat nor crew were ever seen again.

Bob Puharic That's awesome Bob. I never had SSB, but cruised Mexico and based out of La Paz for 10 years, from 1994 though 2004. When making passages, it's really, really nice to hear people on the radio, even if it's just VHF. I lost my rudder off t…

Most people in the Caribbean are leaving the area in May to go North. Hmmm.

  • Laurie Campbell
Lots of people sail around Great Britain, Norway, the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland, and Canada (both sides) and Alaska. Why are they not given times to sail?
  • Warren Holybee
Rule of thumb, don't be in the tropics during the summer. Either cross the equator to where it's winter, or move to a higher latitude.
This chart gets that wrong in a few places, and would put the sailor in a potential hurricane.

In scandinavia you can sail between april to october/november. Or year around depending on ice and how much clothes you are Willing to wear 😉

    What about the Pacific Northwest?

May-October is exactly when not to be in the Pacific above Panama. The season is exactly the opposite. November-May

I like the idea, but the map is not super precise. For example... I'm not sure the sea of Cortez is May-Oct for the best weather for sailing

    May July Bahamas? Huh?
  • Raychel Brown
Who did this map? so many wrongs! Especially if you have insurance on your boat…this is a hard NO
May be an image of map and text that says 'No May Jul ct'

Agreed Raychel Brown! This is VERY off..
We leave, headed South to Panama from Washington- San Diego, or New York to Florida.. at the end of October.. Hoping you'll be back in Northern ports by May - 1st of June!..
This chart could land those who don't know, smack dab in the middle of a Hurricane!! 😳

Florida season is listed as May-Jun? Seems wacky to me. I consider it to be Nov-May. Otherwise too hot, rainy and hurricanes.

Coyo Munoz you do it in May, sail to Hawaii, which will be 20-30days depending on how fast your boat is. That will put you there June to July, you’ll probably want a couple of weeks to reprovision and see the islands. Then from Hawaii you sail about 50…

North Atlantic (eastwards) is March to June while equatorial Atlantic (westwards) is correctly written as November to February.
Caribbean sea should be labeled always.

May-July in the Caribean? This is daft, cyclone seasons starts in June. In my experience, you get good well-established tradewinds from January to May, then it’s time to think of a safety exit.
